“Well, there are more pants, ’cause he used to take off his pants a lot,” “NCIS” actor Brian Dietzen joked about the changes to the show following Michael Weatherly’s character Tony Dinozzo’s departure at the end of season 13.

In a 2017 Variety interview, the “NCIS” star discussed the changes the show was going through at the time, and how he thought the changes would help the series move forward.

During the first season of the hit CBS show, Tony Dinozzo worked as a “NCIS” Special Agent and a Senior Agent for the Major Case Response Team.

Dinozzo spent a significant amount of time looking for assignments in remote locations. He eventually left the team to see his daughter, whom he shared with fellow “NCIS” agent Ziva David.

“Everything changes at some point,” the actor explained to the publication. “Whether it’s story-wise on the show or real-life when it comes to actors, producers, or writers leaving.”

During the same interview, Dietzen mentioned that the changes might be difficult. They do, however, occasionally assist in propelling the show forward.

“You can either fight that, or you can accept it,” he said. “Or you can try to embrace new storytelling or a new character that’s come in.”

Dinozzo’s departure from “NCIS” opens the door to new storylines.

And isn’t that the truth? Tony Dinozzo was a popular “NCIS” character. His departure allowed Wilmer Valderrama’s Nick Torres to join the team. This addition brought many new and exciting storylines.

“There’s a sense of opportunity there,” said the actor in an interview. “It’s been great not to see a single direct replacement for his character come in, which I believe would have been a huge mistake.”

Brian Dietzen observed that introducing new characters created entirely new storylines. The additions also aided in the shaping of existing ones.

“They’ve brought in a few different characters to build the roles,” said the actor during the interview.

Jimmy Palmer, Brian Dietzen’s “NCIS” character, joined the team as a part-time player at the start of the series. Palmer was eventually promoted to assist former examiner Donald “Ducky” Mallard.

Following Ducky’s retirement, the character most recently serves as the head examiner on the “NCIS” team.
