Bad Cinderella, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s latest Broadway musical, will close early due to a lack of Tony Award nominations. The final performance of the show is scheduled for June 4 at the Imperial Theatre. Lindey Genao portrayed the title character, and former Blue Bloods star Sami Gayle portrayed one of her evil stepsisters, Adele.
“I am eternally grateful to every human who made my return to Broadway possible, and to everyone on this beautiful experience whose contributions make it so inexpressibly special,” Gayle wrote on Instagram on May 11. “Working on this production has been a PURE JOY. You still have 3.5 weeks to see for yourself! Come sing, dance, and act your heart out with us!”
The film Bad Cinderella began previews in February and opened on March 23. According to Playbill, the show will conclude with 33 previews and 85 performances. Laurence Connor, who directed the original West End production, directed the Broadway production.
Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) wrote the book for Bad Cinderella, which had music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by David Zippel. It was a reimagining of a traditional fairy tale. It received mostly negative feedback and was unable to find an audience. The fact that it received no Tony nominations was the final nail in the coffin.
The show previously struggled in the West End, where it was forced to perform in front of capped crowds of 50% at the Gillian Lynne Theatre. It will open in June 2021 and will close a year later. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella was the title of the UK production, which starred Carrie Hope Fletcher in the title role.
Due to the impending closure of Bad Cinderella, Broadway will be without a Lloyd Webber production for the first time since 1979. The EGOT winner composed music for long-running hits such as Evita, Cats, and The Phantom of the Opera. Cats was on Broadway for 18 years, while Phantom retired in April after a 35-year run.
On Blue Bloods, Gayle portrayed Nicky Reagan-Boyle, the onscreen daughter of Bridget Moynahan and Peter Herrmann. She remained a main cast member until Season 10, when her character moved from New York to San Francisco for a new opportunity. Gayle will return on Friday, May 19, for the Season 13 finale. Jennifer Esposito and Tony Terraciano will also appear as special guests in the episode titled “Forgive Us Our Trespasses.”
